PomBioTech was originally founded as PomBioTech Dr. Bureik & Dr. Laux GbR (a business entity that is comparable to a general partnership) by the biochemist Dr. Matthias Bureik and the business-consultant Dr. Armin Laux in November 2003 as a spin-off of the chair of Biochemistry at Saarland University. The name of the company is derived from the yeast species Schizosaccharomyces pombe, which was first isolated from an East African beer called pombe by the locals. In 2005, this company was distinguished as one of the 25 most promising newly founded companies nationwide by the German business magazine impulse. Due to the very favorable development of its predecessor, PomBioTech GmbH (a limited liability corporation) was established by the same founders in April 2006. The place of business is the Starterzentrum at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, which is located in the very heart of Europe.
