Our Products and services The business domain of PomBioTech is the development and application of biotransformation techniques based on genetically modified (“recombinant”) fission yeasts of the species Schizosaccharomyces pombe. In contrast to chemical processes, biotechnological approaches allow the use of specialized enzymes. These display their activity only on defined positions of a target molecule, even if from a chemical point of view the same reaction would be possible on other positions as well. With intricate target molecules with many possible reaction positions (like steroid hormones) enzymatical reactions therefore lead to significantly fewer unwanted side-products than chemical reactions. Because enzymatical reactions normally take place in living cells, they do not require the extreme reaction conditions (e.g. high pressure, high temperature, toxic auxiliary sustances) that are typical for chemical reactions. Due to these attributes biotechnological operations in many cases are much more efficient and cost-saving than the corresponding chemical processes.
